A state union is somewhat supportive of an agricultural bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives.
The Wisconsin Farmers Union (WFU) says the passage of the Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2026 is a step forward, but is concerned that the bill may not go far enough to meet the needs of family farmers and rural communities.
Union President Darin Von Ruden says they need a farm bill that “works for family-scale farms, not one that continues to tilt the playing field toward the largest operations.”
The WFU also noted raised concerns about cuts to nutrition programs, the lack of country of origin labeling, and adding hurdles in the Rural Energy for American Program, or REAP.
Von Ruden says families feel it right away when SNAP benefits are cut, and producers with country-of-origin labeling, “are left competing without a level playing field while consumers are left guessing.”
Von Ruden asks the U.S. Senate to take a closer look at filling gaps in the House proposal.
