No action has been taken on a potential moratorium on data centers in Sheboygan.
The Common Council chose to send the data center moratorium to the City Plan Commission this week by a 7-3 vote.
The ordinance proposed by Alders Susie Boorse, Michael Close, Alanza Grawien, and Grazia Perrella would establish Section 105-8 of the Municipal Code and create a “temporary moratorium on the issuance of zoning and building permit approvals for data centers with greater than 10,000 square feet of floor area.”
The language of the ordinance continues to say, “The purpose of this moratorium is to provide the city with adequate time to create reasonable regulations and to respond by regulation amendments reflecting anticipated changes to state law for the development of data centers.”
While also adding that passing the moratorium is necessary to protect the health, safety, and general welfare of the city.
Those voting in favor of sending the matter to the Plan Commission were Alders Erin Bremser, Dean Dekker, Bryan Kelly, Perrella, Grawien, Close, and Boorse, while Alders Joe Heidemeann, Ryan Menzer, and Trey Mitchell opposed.
When this matter will be taken up by the Plan Commission remains uncertain, however, the exact language of the proposed data center moratorium in Sheboygan can be found inside the Common Council’s meeting agenda.
