The lakeshore’s Aging and Disabilities Resource Center (ADRC) is focusing on not putting an age to a person’s future this month.
Department Director Wendy Hutterer talked about Older Americans Month on Monday’s episode of WOMT’s ADRC Insider.
Specifically, the issue of ageism, or stereotyping against a person based on their age.
Hutterer says aging is not a disease and should not be treated as such.
Instead, those getting older should be preparing for and continuing self-care and keeping a positive mindset.
Hutterer also noted that it’s important to celebrate what’s ahead in life.
This year’s theme for Older Americans Month is Champion Your Health, according to the Administration for Community Living (ACL).
The federal group says the day is supposed to encourage taking an active role in managing one’s own health, advocating for oneself, accessing preventative care, and making decisions that support independence.
Information on the ADRC of the Lakeshore, health and wellness programs, and more that the group provides can be found on their webpage at manitowoccountywi.gov.
