It’s time to get bored, doctor’s orders.
Emplify Health by Bellin is encouraging the public to allow themselves to experience boredom in an effort to boost healthy brain activity.
In this day and age, where life is dominated by screen time, social media, and endless apps, health professionals recommend taking time to unplug and truly experience boredom, which is considered time free of stimulation.
On what the benefits of spending some time bored can be, Emplify Health by Bellin mental health therapist, Mackenzi Conard, LPC, said, “Being bored is one of the greatest ways to encourage creative thinking and new ideas…Stimulation isn’t a bad thing. We just want to avoid filling every gap in our days with content and ideas from a screen. Our brain can do very cool things when given the chance to be bored; we just have to let it be bored enough to start.”
Recommendations for what to do to decrease brain stimulation include saying no to the phone, taking a walk without headphones, and keeping engaging activities nearby.
Those finding themselves struggling to cut down on screen time or unplugging are encouraged to contact Emplify Health by Bellin Behavioral Health by calling 920-433-3630.
