An area conservation group is asking residents to be mindful of invasive species this spring.
The Sheboygan County Planning and Conservation Department has said that, despite being only just over a month into spring, aquatic invasive species (AIS) are already on the move, and you can help limit the spread.
With that, the department reminded the public that before launching a boat and leaving, you are required, by law, to inspect your watercraft, trailers, and equipment, remove all attached aquatic plants or animals, drain all water from boats, trailers, and equipment, and never remove plants or live fish away from a waterbody unless fishing to keep.
It is also recommended to let your boat and equipment dry completely before your next outing on the water.
Penalties for failing to do any of these tasks can result in fines that exceed $2,000.
On how these actions can benefit our local ecosystems, the Sheboygan County Planning and Conservation Department said, “Even small actions make a big difference. AIS can spread quickly and cause long-term damage to our ecosystems. Let’s keep our waters clean, healthy, and enjoyable this season.”
