The City of Sheboygan has received significant funding from the federal government.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has announced that Sheboygan is one of more than 50 recipients across the country to receive a portion of $137 million in funding through the FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.
In total, the City was awarded $6 million for a flood mitigation project along the Lake Michigan shoreline that will increase resilience and protect Sheboygan’s wastewater infrastructure.
On exactly how these funds will be used, FEMA noted, “The city of Sheboygan will construct a retaining wall along the Lake Michigan shoreline to prevent further erosion and make improvements to mitigate the possibility of a wastewater treatment plant shutdown…Manholes serving the treatment plant will be raised and armored to keep the infrastructure functioning when threatened by severe storms, ice hazards, and flooding.”
This funding comes as the final installment of a $7.8 million grant Sheboygan was awarded.
Through the agreement, FEMA will cover 77% of the project cost while the City and Wisconsin Emergency Management will fund the final 23%.
