Court costs have gone up for the Cities of Manitowoc and Kiel.
The Manitowoc Common Council last week approved a resolution to increase the maximum costs for ordinance violations to $48.
The change is part of a state law signed in 2025 to increase the allowable municipal court costs, which began in March this year.
A memo from Manitowoc City Attorney Eric Nycz explains that court costs help offset the municipal court’s operating costs.
In Kiel, they explain that the increase to $48 was reviewed to ensure compliance with applicable state statutes.
The state law also noted that each fee received by the court will have the municipal treasurer pay $5 monthly to the secretary of administration for deposit in the general fund and “shall retain the balance for the use of the municipality.”
