The City of Manitowoc has approved the final development agreement for a new apartment complex on the former Mirro property.
That’s what Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels explained yesterday on WOMT’s Be My Guest program.
City documents show that construction of a new four-story, 52,000-square-foot workforce-housing apartment building with 59 apartments will begin.
It will include 21 one-bedroom, 20 two-bedroom, and 18 three-bedroom apartments, along with other amenities such as on-site parking, a community room, a playground, and a fitness center.
It will cost just over $14 million to complete construction, bringing the total project cost to around $19.5 million.
Nickels says the next step is for the city to close in the coming months.
“July 1st is hopefully the deadline, and then they’ll start work,” he explained. “Pretty soon, you’ll see some work happening in spring here. There’s just some final cleanup, not a lot, but just some final details.”
The city received a grant from the U.S. EPA to clean up the former factory site due to contaminated soil.
The city also received some loan funding.
All the work will be done on the Washington Street side of the property, while what could be developed on the Franklin Street side is still being worked through.
