An incident involving a piece of machinery caused a gas line to rupture in Kewanee.
The Kewaunee Police Department first reported the incident just after 11:00 last night (April 20th), later sharing photos of a backhoe that had slid into a crevasse, hitting the gas line.
Everyone in a two-block radius around Dodge and Rose Street was instructed to shelter in place or to evacuate, while homes near the leak were evacuated.
Residents gathered at Kewaunee High School awaiting the all-clear. Roughly half an hour later, the gas line was reported to have been shut off, and the scene was rendered safe.
No details were released on what caused the piece of equipment to fall into the hole.
The Kewaunee Police Department thanked Wisconsin Public Service and local fire, rescue, and emergency service personnel for their work on the scene.
