The Manitowoc Public School District and the City of Manitowoc are looking to work together for the future of the Madison Elementary School property.
Today, (April 20th), the Manitowoc Common Council Committee of the Whole will meet to discuss and determine whether to move forward with a potential offer to purchase the elementary school property from the district for $1.
MPSD Communications Specialist Ruby Gutierrez explains that the Madison School site has a long-standing connection between the city and the district, with the land originally owned by the city and gifted to the district in the early 1950s to build the school.
Manitowoc also owns property adjacent to Madison Elementary, creating a unique opportunity for coordinated planning and redevelopment.
The district continues to say that both the city and MPSD believe working together is in the best interest of taxpayers, and it will position the community for thoughtful, strategic development.
Mayor Justin Nickels says by working with the district, “we can ensure the Madison property is utilized in a way that strengthens the surrounding neighborhood and benefits the entire community.”
MPSD Superintendent Lee Thennes says the city is well-positioned to lead the work in a way that supports thoughtful economic development and long-term community growth.
If the Manitowoc Common Council approves the land purchase, the MPSD school board will hold a special meeting on April 28th to make it happen.
