Wisconsin Emergency Management, along with Ready Wisconsin, has announced that, given recent severe weather events affecting communities across the state, the annual statewide tornado drills scheduled for Thursday (tomorrow) are canceled and won’t be rescheduled.
WEM Administrator Greg Engle says in a news release, “While tornado preparedness is critically important, our immediate priority is on the safety and recovery of those impacted by these recent storms.” He continues, “We recognize the value of these drills, but currently, our communities need the flexibility and focus on real-world responses.”
The National Weather Service has issued over 150 severe weather warnings in Wisconsin in the first half of April, breaking the previous record of 123 for the entire month of April in 2002.
Ready Wisconsin encourages people to still be informed about tornado safety, review personal emergency plans, and remain vigilant year-round for potential severe weather and tornadoes.
The next statewide tornado drills in Wisconsin are scheduled for April 15th, 2027. More information is available at readywisconsin.wi.gov/tornadoes.
