The Manitowoc Public School District’s Superintendent has responded to the recent walk out by students at Manitowoc Lincoln High School.
Lincoln Student Paige Hinz organized the walk out, which was a protest of ICE activity.
Superintendent Lee Thennes tells SeehaferNews.com that this was not a school-sanctioned event, but staff members were present to “supervise and support students, consistent with district expectations, while continuing to uphold a neutral stance and not endorsing any particular viewpoint.”
He also noted, “We respect that students have the right to express their perspectives, and our role as a school district is to ensure that any such activity occurs in a manner that maintains a safe, orderly, and respectful environment for all students and staff… At Manitowoc Public School District, we are committed to fostering a culture where students can engage in civic awareness and dialogue in ways that reflect respect for others and our shared school community.”
Hinz says she hopes that the public demonstration will help draw attention to the issue, and that “ICE agents will start being held to the same standards as local law enforcement with due process.”
