Manitowoc Lutheran High School will be the site for the Manitowoc County All-Star Boys and Girls Basketball games, which will be held this Sunday afternoon (April 12th).
Players from all eight Manitowoc County schools (Manitowoc Lincoln, Roncalli, Manitowoc Lutheran, Two Rivers, Valders, Mishicot, Reedsville, and Kiel, along with female student athletes from Brillion) will participate.
One of the event’s organizers, Joel Kubsch, tells SeehaferNews.com that this event is back after a seven-year hiatus.
”We had the first game at the UW Green Bay-Manitowoc campus, and everyone enjoyed it,” Kubsch recalled. “COVID-19 forced the 2020 game to be cancelled, and it hasn’t been held since. I spoke with Mike Behnke (Manitowoc Luthern Head Girls Basketball Coach) and Scott Loberger (Manitowoc Lutheran Athletic Director) along with other individuals interested in helping and all the pieces fit together to resurrect this event and give these kids one more chance to play the game they love.”
Kubsch says a total of 42 student-athletes (26 boys and 16 girls) will converge on Lancer Circle to lace up the sneakers one last time to represent their high school and Manitowoc County.
”A lot of kids don’t get the chance to play against one another despite being in Manitowoc County,” he explained. “They played in different conferences, and some of them haven’t met each other, let alone play basketball together. I’ve heard from many people, and I personally feel that this is a great opportunity for these kids to not only play basketball but also get to know one another on a personal level. “
Those who are scheduled to attend include Ben Prochnow and Arden Strenn from Division Five State Champion Reedsville, Donovan Cowley and Dominik Frozena from EWC Champion Roncalli, Manitowoc Lutheran’s top two scorers in the history of the girl’s program, Melissa Melhorn and Makiah Krause, Valder’s girls all-time leading scorer Megan Hockammer, and Mishicot’s second all-time leading girl’s scorer, Kensington Rosenow.
Kubsch adds that not only are these kids great athletes, but they’re even better people.
”These boys and girls have, and obviously continue, to love the game of basketball, and this will be evident on the court Sunday,” he noted. “These are quality kids that come from quality families. Any opportunity for them to step on the court to showcase their talents is a good thing.”
A three-point contest will begin at 1:00 p.m. with the girls’ game tipping at 2:00 p.m. and the boys’ game scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
Fans are asked to bring for admission canned food items to donate to Peter’s Pantry in Manitowoc to help those deal with food insecurity throughout Manitowoc County, and a monetary donation (if able).
Doors are scheduled to open at noon.
