A Manitowoc man charged in a 2023 stabbing incident has been convicted.
63-year-old David J. Downs pleaded no contest to a lesser charge of 1st-degree reckless injury with use of a dangerous weapon last week after the matter was supposed to go to trial the following week.
Other charges of substantial battery, intending bodily harm, battery, and resisting or obstructing an officer were dismissed but read into the record.
Downs will be back in court on June 8th for a sentencing hearing.
He was previously charged with attempted 1st-degree intentional homicide after an incident in June 2023.
Manitowoc Police were called to the 400 block of Riverview Drive after a witness observed the 63-year-old stab a victim, later identified as his wife, with a butcher knife.
Downs would flee on foot but would later be arrested.
The suspect’s wife needed life-saving surgery for stab wounds, and what provoked the attack is still unknown at this time.
