A bill created by Wisconsin’s Senate Majority Leader has been vetoed by Governor Evers.
9th District State Senator Devin LeMahieu introduced Assembly 699 on December 2nd.
The bill would have raised the number of students who could be transported by a transportation service in a regular vehicle other than a school bus from 9 to 14.
The number would also change in an emergency, from 10 to 15 students at most.
Gov. Evers says he vetoed the bill because he objects to the state Legislature “enabling kids to travel in vehicles to or from school that are not recommended as safe for pupil transportation.”
Specifically, the bill would allow school districts to consider purchasing 15-seat vehicles, even though the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration doesn’t recommend them for transporting people.
Gov. Evers also called the bill confusing for licensing and equipment requirements.
