The state senator who tried to pass a bill to eliminate a tax on tips has released a statement after it was vetoed by Governor Tony Evers.
State Senator Andre Jacque said he is, “disappointed with Governor Evers’ decision today to veto the ‘No Tax on Tips’ bill, a policy which he himself included in his proposed budget last year.”
The New Franken Republican says that had the legislation passed, it would have mirrored the federal income tax exemption on tips enacted last year.
Sen. Jacaque continues to say that tips are “compensation to employees in the robust hospitality and tourism industries for the incredible service they provide. This proposal would have provided financial relief to many of those Wisconsin workers, at a time when the price of everything is continually going up, and everyone is having a hard time making ends meet.”
The bill also passed with bipartisan support, including 60-31 in the State Assembly and 20-12 in the State Senate.
State Representative Ron Tusler, who represents a portion of western Manitowoc County, was the lead author in the state assembly.
