The co-owner and editor of Fresh Water Press helped students in the Two Rivers School District with their reading.
Tracey Koach explained that she was asked to volunteer and found herself in a third-grade class for a few hours a week.
Initially, three young students joined her in a small conference room where they would read a book together and complete a worksheet.
Koach says that reading outside the classroom makes a difference in the classroom, not only improving reading comprehension and expanding vocabulary, but also boosting their self-confidence.
To keep them interested, she also shared with the students that she is a geologist when they had a reading and worksheet about rocks and how they are formed.
Every student also got to pick out a polished stone that she brought from a rock shop in Two Rivers.
Coach says it sparked sharing about who collects rocks at home.
She finished by saying that reading and learning were fun, and that it should always be fun to learn.
