Efforts remain ongoing to free an American journalist with Wisconsin ties who was kidnapped in Iraq on Tuesday.
The journalist has been identified as freelancer Shelly Kittleson.
The US Secretary of State’s office said on social media an individual with ties to an Iranian-aligned militia group is believed to be involved in the abduction and has been taken into custody by Iraqi authorities.
He also said the department “previously fulfilled our duty to warn this individual of threats against them.”
Al-Monitor, one of the publications Kittleson works for, has called for her “safe and immediate release.”
The Journal Sentinel reports Kittleson is from Mount Horeb in Dane County.
