The Kiel girls’ softball team opened up its season yesterday with a back-and-forth contest against Random Lake.
The Raiders and Rams traded runs in the first inning, but the host Rams would plate three runs in the 3rd to take a 4-2 lead into the 5th.
That is when the Raiders’ bats came alive.
Kiel plated four runs that inning, but immediately gave up a pair in the 6th, leaving the game all knotted up entering the 7th and final inning.
Kiel would plate one more run, and Senior Pitcher Liz Neils would hold on to secure the 7-6 win.
Neils went the distance on the mound, striking out five batters along the way, while helping her own cause at the plate with a 3-hit, 1 RBI performance.
Her classmate, Emma Rolkosky, smacked a triple and drove home 3 runs while fellow Senior Aubrianne Freund went 2 for 3 at the plate, knocking in a pair of runs.
The Raiders are back in action tonight as they travel to Reedsville for the Panthers’ season opener.
