The Manitowoc County Board could move forward with a moratorium on data center development.
County Executive Bob Ziegelbauer reexplained on WOMT’s Be My Guest program last week that the Towns of Two Rivers, Mishicot, and Two Creeks asked the county for a moratorium after representatives from data center developers approached residents about their land.
He says the issue will be taken up next Monday (March 30th) at the county’s Park and Planning Commission.
He added, “And if they forwarded to the county board, it will probably be taken up late in April or in May.”
The county executive then says data centers will be a big issue in the future and compares them to a “mini nuclear power plant.”
Ziegelbauer continued to mention that they also take up a lot of land and use a lot of power.
“And that’s another one of the problems,” he noted. “Because we don’t want the data centers to cause our utility rates to go up. And it causes a lot of environmental concerns.”
He finished saying that this is a long process, and their future in Manitowoc County is uncertain.
Ziegelbauer will not be in charge of the county when the Board of Supervisors meets next month.
He has decided to retire after serving in the job for about 20 years.
