The Sheboygan Fire Department has announced a new prehospital blood administration program, which will be launched next month.
This program allows paramedics to begin life-saving blood transfusions at the scene of an emergency or while en route to the hospital.
The Department noted, “Severe bleeding remains one of the leading causes of preventable death in trauma patients, and early access to blood has been shown to significantly improve survival.”
The program has been developed over the past year in collaboration with the Department’s Medical Director, Dr. Erin McGlynn, and Aurora Regional EMS, following approval by the Wisconsin State EMS Office.
Also on April 15th, the Department will be hosting a community blood drive.
The event will be held at the Station 3 Headquarters, located at 1326 North 25th Street in Sheboygan, from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Donors are asked to enter through the west-side door on the back of the building.
