Senator Tammy Baldwin is looking to help farmers get the most accurate information on fertilizer and fertilizer products.
Sen. Baldwin has introduced the bipartisan Fertilizer Transparency Act of 2026, which would require the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to collect and publish data on fertilizer prices from manufacturers on a weekly basis.
Currently, the USDA conducts an annual voluntary survey on the prices that producers pay for inputs.
Sen. Baldwin said of the bill, “Higher fertilizer costs cut into farmers’ bottom lines and increase costs for folks at the grocery store – and we need to do everything we can to address this. I am proud to work with my colleagues in both parties to help bring real transparency and accountability to the fertilizer market and fight to lower farmers’ input costs.”
The legislation is led by South Dakota Republican Senator John Thune and cosponsored by Senators Amy Klobuchar, a Democrat from Minnesota, and Iowa Republican Chuck Grassley.
