Scammers have found another way to pose as government officials.
The Appleton Police Department is warning residents of an email scam that has been making the rounds.
The fraudulent emails have been telling residents that they are required to make payments to the city for a variety of reasons.
There are several ways to ensure you will not be the next victim. First, check the email address to ensure they are coming from a recognized domain.
For example, emails from a legitimate Appleton city employee would include @appletonwi.gov.
If you are unsure, copy and paste the email address into a search engine such as Google. Also, many of these scam emails will have poor grammar, poor-quality graphics, urgent requests, and unfamiliar links.
As always, if something seems off, call or email the known official number or email for the entity claiming to contact you, and they will confirm or deny if you owe them money.
