Two Wisconsin congressmen are calling for an investigation into a northeastern Wisconsin nonprofit that helps those who may be less fortunate.
8th District Congressman Tony Wied and 1st District Congressman Bryan Steil have written a letter to U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner asking to investigate mismanagement of taxpayer dollars by Newcap Inc. in Green Bay.
Newcap Inc. is supposed to help people out of poverty and help provide economic security while enhancing community development.
However, Wied and Steil say that in 2023 and 2024, the nonprofit reported a $2 million deficit, despite receiving nearly $11 million from the federal government and $3 million from the state.
There are allegations of abnormally high salaries for Newcap’s CEO and misuse of grant funds to purchase “first-class plane tickets” and “team building activities” that included high-end dinners and cooking classes, among others.
Rep. Wied says the allegations of misuse of funds, “or the personal gain of executives and employees, are unacceptable. I urge HUD to conduct a full investigation, so taxpayers across Wisconsin’s 8th District can see how every penny was spent.”
