The City of Sheboygan has moved one step closer to acquiring one of the area’s most treasured landmarks.
At Monday’s (March 2nd) Common Council meeting, the group unanimously approved a resolution to submit an application to purchase the Sheboygan Breakwater Lighthouse from the U.S. Coast Guard.
Last year, the Coast Guard declared the iconic lighthouse on the shores of Lake Michigan as surplus and began exploring routes to sell the structure.
As per the application, the City is looking to acquire the lighthouse at no cost, however, they are prepared to commit just under $500,000 to refurbishing the structure, which would include corrosion mitigation and repairing the structure’s connection to the concrete base.
The City has stated that they are hoping to acquire the lighthouse for historic preservation and public benefit, while adding, “The intended use of the Sheboygan Breakwater Lighthouse will remain consistent with its historic function and character. The structure will be preserved as a historic aid to navigation and an iconic landmark.”
More information on Sheboygan’s effort to purchase the Breakwater Lighthouse can be found online inside the Common Council’s Monday agenda.
