City officials in Sheboygan are hoping to undertake a major cleanup project at Evergreen Park.
City Forester Tim Bull approached the Public Works Committee earlier this week with a resolution to remove 567 dead or hazardous trees at the park, which pose potential dangerous conditions for roads or major trails.
If approved, Shufflebotham Tree Service out of Plymouth would be contracted to remove the hazardous trees for a fee of $34,000 prior to Evergreen Parks opening on May 1st.
In regard to the current state of the park, Bull stated, “There are many more dead and hazardous trees in the park that are not included in this project, but due to the proximity of these 567 trees to the road and major trails, these have been selected to be removed first.”
Last year, Sheboygan was awarded with a $25,000 Urban Forestry Grant from the Department of Natural Resources, which required matching funding from the City.
Part of that funding included an assessment at Evergreen, which determined the over 500 trees needing to be removed, while the second portion is aimed at the removal itself.
With funding for the cleanup coming from the DNR, the City would also be subject to some reimbursement if the contract is awarded to Shufflebotham Tree Service.
This resolution was unanimously approved by the Public Works Committee and now goes before the Sheboygan Common Council for full approval at a later date.
