The City of Manitowoc is getting ready for building on the former Mirro Property.
Community Development Director Adam Tegan told the Community Development Authority (CDA) that the new Maritime Lofts would have 59 apartments, including 21 one-bedroom apartments, 20 two-bedroom apartments, and 18 three-bedroom apartments.
On-site amenities would also include a community room, a fitness center, an onsite leasing office, and on-site residential storage.
Tegan said that this would also be a workforce housing project.
“It has obtained low-income tax credits through the state already,” he explained. “And they are working on assembling all their other pieces of the capital stack, which I believe includes some money from the Department of Administration, potentially federal home funds.”
The CDA unanimously approved the site plan for the apartments, which would be facing the Washington Street side.
Wisconsin Market President for Gorman and Company, Ted Matkom, told the committee that they wanted to make the apartments look modern but still look like they would fit downtown.
Construction could be starting later this summer, however that could change if the Wisconsin DNR decides to step in.
Matkom noted, “But I think Stantec working with the city has that pretty well managed.”
Mayor Justin Nickels told Seehafernews.com that the Board of Public Works opened up a bid to support the development and get it prepared for construction.
The city also has to sell the land before any building can be put up, and they are looking at bids.
“But we’re still on the timeline for July 1st to hopefully sell the property over to the developer,” he stated. “And late summer (or) fall, start construction on the Washington Street side for the apartment complex.”
They used federal grant money to help clean up the soil and debris left from the former Mirro plant within the last year.
