The City of Sheboygan is looking to make improvements to one of its most heavily trafficked trails.
At this week’s Public Works Committee meeting, Parks Manager Joe Kerlin proposed a resolution that, if accepted, would allow the City to seek federal funding to improve the Lakefront Trail.
The trail, which was constructed in 1993, runs approximately 1.67 miles and needs major crack repairs and filling, sealcoating, and new ADA curb ramp construction.
As of now, Kerlin estimates the project to cost just over $194,000, and federal aid would come from applying to the Federal Recreational Trails Grant Program through the Department of Natural Resources.
The grant through the DNR cannot exceed $100,000, and the remainder of the project has been recommended to be funded through previously budgeted ADA funds for 2026.
Parks Manager Kerlin continues to say, “The city should continue to maintain high-quality, well-maintained, safe park spaces by focusing on maintenance of current facilities and working towards compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act within current park facilities.”
The Public Works Committee unanimously approved the resolution, which will now go before the Sheboygan Common Council for full approval in the future.
