The Sheboygan Police Department is looking to protect children in today’s online world.
Today (February 10th) is recognized as Safer Internet Day, a day aiming to make the internet a safer and better place where everyone is empowered to use technology responsibly, respectfully, critically, and creatively.
To help, the Sheboygan Police Department has offered 10 tips for parents and guardians when it comes to children’s online activity.
They include setting ground rules for children, understanding the technology they are using, being aware of all the technology a child is using, setting parental controls, and installing monitoring software on their devices.
Other tips offered involve closely monitoring all online activity, knowing who children are talking to online, learn online lingo, using all resources available at your fingertips, and empowering kids with knowledge about online safety that will last them a lifetime.
They also provided signs to look for that show your child may have been victimized online.
A child victimized online may become withdrawn and isolated from family and friends, you may find inappropriate material on their devices, or if they receive mail, money, or gifts from unknown people.
In the event that you or your child is the victim of online exploitation, you are urged to contact your local authorities.
