Two civil rights icons will be at the center of an upcoming event at Lakeland University.
Lakeland will be hosting a talk entitled “The Individual and the Community” on Thursday (February 12th) inside the Campus Center Event Space, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Author, historian, and Lakeland University-Japan faculty member Patrick Parr will head the interactive talk, highlighting the lived experiences of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. during the civil rights movements, including the obstacles they faced in combating widespread racism, bigotry, and discrimination both in prison and in seminary.
After focusing on the two civil rights giants, Parr will transition to a wider discussion, providing other experiences from historical figures of the time and the challenges they faced in their early 20s.
He will also invite those in attendance to use those lived experiences of civil rights leaders to learn how they can be applied to their personal lives in the current day.
Parr is an established author, having written Malcolm Before X, One Week in America: The 1968 Notre Dame Literary Festival and a Changing Nation, and The Seminarian: Martin Luther King Jr. Comes of Age.
