Wisconsin State Assembly members meet during the 16th floor session in the Assembly chambers at the Wisconsin State Capitol
A local Assemblyman has introduced a bill package to help support state educators.
26th District Assemblyman Joe Sheehan of Sheboygan and his Democratic colleagues in the Senate and Assembly brought forth the Teaching is a Profession Bill Package on Wednesday (February 4th).
This package contains four bills, all aiming to recognize teaching as a profession on a legislative level.
LRB-6172 will require the state to pay student teachers for their hours worked, while LRB-4546 would add an elected teacher representative to local school boards to be a voice for those they represent.
The Grow Your Own bill, LRB-4254, will encourage high school students enter the teaching profession, and LRB-4488 aims to add a longevity bonus for teachers who remain with a district for at least five years.
With an extensive background as an educator, Sheehan said, “We can all agree that educators are a critical part of preparing our youth, and society, for a successful future. For years our schools have told us that there is a crisis around hiring and retaining quality educators in our state. This legislative package supports our education workforce by treating our teachers as the professionals they are.”
