ThedaCare is offering tips for those who might feel the effects of osteoarthritis during this time of year.
Osteoarthritis, often referred to as OA, is a chronic, degenerative joint disease that happens when the protective cartilage cushioning the ends of bones wears down over time, eventually causing bones to rub together.
Sports Physician Dr. Andrew Leung says that with colder weather, those with OA might experience a flare-up because cold generally makes people more sensitive to pain.
Leung says a flare-up could include intensified joint pain, swelling, and significant joint stiffness, especially in the morning.
However, there are ways to ease cold-related aches. Leung says those who have OA should stay healthy and active, saying people should eat “Nutritious foods, particularly those rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as nuts, seeds and fatty fish, are great for fighting the inflammation that may cause flare-ups.”
Those with the disease should also maintain a healthy weight, move and stretch regularly, and stay warm.
