A man was able to rescue himself from the Fox River after falling through the ice.
The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office says the 23-year-old man was attempting to walk across the river near Ohio Street in Oshkosh just after 8:00 Tuesday evening when the ice gave way.
He was able to get himself out of the water and back to shore safely, where he then called 911 for help.
A passerby who witnessed the situation also called 911, leading to police and first responders rushing to the scene.
He was warmed up and given dry clothes, but was otherwise uninjured.
The Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents, “No ice is 100% safe. This is particularly true in areas with a current, such as the Fox River.”
