As Human Trafficking Prevention Month came to an end this weekend, Sheboygan’s Task Force has shared some useful information regarding where CyberTips are coming from.
Brandon Kehoe, a detective with the Sheboygan Police Department and leader of the Sheboygan County Human Trafficking Task Force, has shared data from the State of Wisconsin, breaking down what apps or websites were most prolific when it comes to CyberTips received.
Kehoe’s data showed that the vast majority of tips in the month of December originated from the popular social media app, Instagram, while no other site took up more than 6%.
Kehoe stated that Instagram played a significant role and that parents should know that sextortion is frequently facilitated on the app.
To this point, he said, “Ongoing, open conversations with your kids can go a long way in preventing them from becoming victims. Those same conversations also help prepare them if a friend confides in them.”
The second most CyberTips, 6%, originated from Snapchat, while TikTok was third, accounting for 5%.
Other notable apps and websites drawing CyberTips included Discord, Twitter, and Roblox.
Kehoe finished by adding that anyone looking for additional resources on how to keep their children safe while navigating the web can visit the Protect Kids Online Facebook page.
