A Door County fire may have been caused by discarded ashes on a deck.
The Brussels-Union-Gardner Fire Department was called to a home yesterday (February 2nd) just before 1:45 p.m. for a structure fire in the 1700 block of Cedar Lane in the Town of Brussels.
Initial reports indicated that the fire was producing active smoke and flames from the back porch, which eventually spread to the second floor of the home.
The first fire crew arrived to find a power line completely down across the street and across the yard leading up to the home, limiting their ability start putting the fire out.
A Rapid Response Vehicle equipped with an Ultra High Pressure suppression system gained access to the house via a secondary driveway and deployed a hose to the home to start attacking the flames at the front door.
Other crews then arrived at the house and fully extinguished the fire.
The home was vented, and fire damage was contained to the exterior and to a second-story bedroom and attic space.
Brussels-Union-Gardner (BUG) firefighters say the fire appears to have started on the back porch of the home and could have been caused by ashes left after the homeowner cleaned out their pellet stove the day before.
BUG continues saying that wood-burning stoves must always be secure and cleaned, and that they must be doused with water to ensure all ashes are cool and cannot reignite.
The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.
