An Eastern Wisconsin Assemblyman is looking to help address the school bus driver shortage in Wisconsin.
Last week, the Assembly passed Assembly Bill 393, which was introduced by ten person group, including Representative Shae Sortwell.
The Gibson legislator tells SeehaferNews.com that the bill aims to “extend the license renewal process for drivers age 70 and older from two to four years,” and “expand the pool of healthcare professionals who can serve on the medical review board in order to reduce the risk of cancellation of review appointments for bus drivers.”
For his work on this bill, Rep. Sortwell was named the 2025 Legislative Champion by the School Bus Association.
He also noted that “Wisconsin has lost about 20 percent (more than 3,000) of its school bus drivers in the last two decades,” making this bill incredibly important.
AB 393 will next go before the Senate for approval.
