Wisconsin’s governor made a stop in Manitowoc to show his support for a local organization’s mission.
Governor Evers stopped at Grow It Forward on Marshall Street and took a tour to see the group’s mission of providing food for those in need in action.
Gov. Evers saw Grow It Forward’s hydroponic farm, where fresh vegetables are grown, before hearing more about Harmony Café in downtown Manitowoc and even helping pack food for kids as part of the organization’s after-school backpack program
He called Grow It Forward special and credited Manitowoc for their charity.
“There are so many people in the Manitowoc area that participate in making sure that people aren’t hungry,” he stated. “This is one of the best in the State of Wisconsin.”
We asked the governor about a potential government shutdown looming at the end of the week, which had previously threatened a pause to SNAP benefits.
However, Daugs tells Seehafernews.com that funding has been approved through September.
Gov. Evers did highlight $10 million approved in the 2025-2027 biennial state budget will support the Food Security Initiative, connecting farmers with local food pantries to help provide locally grown food.
“I think the state needs to do more,” he explained. “I know that the federal government has kind of rolled back a lot of the things that they’ve been doing. Whatever we can do at the state level, we’ll do it. And I know the people here in Manitowoc will continue to do the good work they do.”
Gov. Evers also called on the legislature to do more to help families with food assistance to fund the Health Food Incentives Program, or SNAP for Wisconsin, after the passing of the One Big Beautiful Bill.
Republicans called the federal bill necessary to avoid a massive tax increase and to reduce abusive spending.
