The Manitowoc County Health Department wants to remind residents to get their homes tested for Radon.
January is National Radon Action Month, a time to learn more about the odorless, radioactive gas.
It’s naturally present in the ground and can enter buildings through their foundations.
Environmental Health Manager Jessica Wanserski explains that radon exposure is one of the major contributors to lung cancer nationally, with an estimated 21,000 lung cancer deaths being linked to the gas.
But there are easy-to-use test kits that can tell residents if their home has high radon levels.
Wanserski notes that short-term test kits are available from the Manitowoc County Health Department for $8.25.
To get a kit, residents just have to stop by their office at 1025 S. 9th Street in Manitowoc or call 920-683-4155.
About one out of every ten homes in Wisconsin has high radon levels, and since you can’t smell, taste, or see the gas, testing is the only solution to know the truth.
