Manitowoc Fire Chief Todd Blaser
The City of Manitowoc’s fire chief is giving some reminders to residents amid extremely cold weather today (January 23rd).
Todd Blaser tells Seehafernews.com that everyone should heat their homes safely, especially if they’re using an extra heating source like a space heater, fireplace, or candles.
Another important tip is to be mindful of carbon monoxide.
“And if you start to feel sick, dizzy, or weak, get yourself out into fresh air right away,” he explained. “The best way to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning is never use your oven to heat your home.”
Blaser also says gas-powered generators can produce the fatal gas. Another important thing to keep an eye on is frostbite, which, with these frigid temperatures, can get on exposed skin in as little as 15 minutes.
“Fingers and toes are often the first areas that are going to be affected,” he stated. “Signs of frostbite are numbness or a change in the skin color.”
Also, excessive shivering, confusion, and slurred speech are signs of hypothermia.
If you see someone out in the cold displaying those signs, call 911 as soon as possible.
