The sheriff of Kewaunee County has announced his retirement.
Sheriff Matt Joski said in a lengthy statement on the Kewaunee County Sheriff’s Department Facebook page that he will complete his term on January 5th, 2027 before retiring after 33 years in law enforcement.
Joski calls the decision not easy, given all the support he’s received over the years. He was first elected to the sheriff’s office in 2006 and told the community that he thought it might be his only term, saying, “ I never imagined I would hold this office of trust for so many years, and it humbles me to this day.”
He also talked about the challenges the county has faced and said he did his best to lead when leadership was called for.
When it comes to the next Kewaunee County Sheriff, Joski says he will not endorse anyone right now but wishes candidates well and asks the community to do their due diligence and examine each person’s character and competence.
Before he leaves office, Joski says he will “continue to keep his foot on the throttle and continue to do his best in my capacity as Sheriff, and to fulfill his obligations, until his successor raises their right hand and begins their service to this wonderful community.”
