The Manitowoc Lincoln boys’ basketball team heads up I-43 tonight to take on the Bay Port Pirates in an FRCC matchup.
The Ships are coming off a huge road win at Green Bay Preble Tuesday night as they held the Hornets to 36 points while senior guards Micah Kubsch, Cade Grapentine, and Jack Bauer combined for 4,1 or two-thirds of the Ships’ average of nearly 61 points per game.
Junior Colton Thorison has stepped in admirably for the injured Brett Danielson, pulling down a team-leading six rebounds per contest.
Danielson suffered a lower-body injury on January 2nd, and his return appears to be a way off.
Bay Port is right in the thick of the FRCC race, as usual.
The Pirates are 6-3 in the FRCC and 10-4 overall.
They are led in scoring by senior guard AJ Ivey.
He averages 16 points per game on better than 50 percent shooting, and he knocks down 72 percent of his free throws.
Junior JT Meyer scores about 12 points per game on 51 percent shooting, but where the Pirates excel is rebounding.
They have 84 more boards than the Ships this season, including a plus-28 on the offensive glass.
They also defend well, committing 13 fouls per contest on average.
An interesting statistic – all of Manitowoc Lincoln’s seven wins have come against sub .500 teams, while they are winless (0-6) against teams with winning records.
Bay Port, on the other hand, is 4-4 this season against teams with .500 or winning records, of which the Ships are (7-7).
This is the first of two meetings between these two teams this season. Coverage on 980 WCUB and cubradio.com begins at 6:45 p.m.
Other boys’ games tonight include a dandy in De Pere as FRCC co-leaders Notre Dame and De Pere meet for the first time this season.
Both are 8-1 in conference and this is the third of five straight home games for the Redbirds.
Denmark looks for their 10th win as they host unbeaten Freedom, Random Lake visits Sheboygan Christian as part of a boy-girl doubleheader, Hilbert hosts St. Lawrence Seminary, Ozaukee heads to Waupun to play Central Wisconsin Christian, and Luxemburg-Casco entertains the Little Chute Mustangs.
