The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is again looking to expand fishing opportunities across the state this weekend.
The DNR’s annual Winter Free Fishing Weekend will take place on Saturday (January 17th) and Sunday (January 18th).
Every year in the winter and summer, the Free Fishing Weekends allow residents and nonresidents alike fish most state waters without a fishing license, trout stamp, or salmon stamp; however, there will be some exceptions statewide, usually regarding trout waters.
The weekend will also serve as a perfect opportunity for newcomers, friends, and families hit the waters to give fishing a try or to introduce another to one of the state’s most beloved sports.
For those choosing to try their hand at ice fishing this weekend, the DNR is urging anglers to exhibit caution, reminding them that no ice is 100% safe, especially this year with such fluctuating and mild temperatures.
While licenses are not required this weekend, all 2025-2026 hook and line regulations, such as bag limits, size limits, and species regulations, will remain in effect and must be abided by.
