An Eastern Wisconsin Senator’s bill aimed at giving added protections to sexual assault survivors has passed a Senate committee vote.
Senate Bill 224, more commonly referred to as the “Sexual Assault Survivor Bill of Rights,” unanimously passed the Senate Committee on Judiciary and Public Safety.
The bill was authored by Senator Andre Jacque of New Franken and Representative Dave Murphy of Hortonville at the request of the national sexual assault victim rights group RISE.
Sen. Jacque tells SeehaferNews.com that the bill aims to “strengthen existing constitutional and statutory rights with statutory enforcement mechanisms, requiring the state to process the kits of sexual assault victims in a timely manner, and keep them informed about the status of their kit throughout an investigation.”
The companion bill AB 236 also unanimously passed the Assembly Committee on Criminal Justice and Public Safety last month.
The Sexual Assault Survivor Bill of Rights must pass both legislative chambers before moving to the governor for final consideration.
If passed, Wisconsin would join 20 other states in establishing a Sexual Assault Survivor Bill of Rights.
