One of the largest companies on the planet has moved one step closer to moving into the Sheboygan area.
The City’s Finance and Personnel Committee met on Monday (January 12th), with the most discussed item on the agenda being the sale of a parcel of land to Amazon for what’s been described as a Class A logistics facility.
City documents show that Amazon is looking to buy approximately 58.1 acres of land from the City, located in the nearly vacant South Pointe Enterprise Campus, located at the corner of Stahl Road and South Taylor Drive.
At the meeting, 13 Sheboygan citizens spoke on the matter, with most voicing their concern over Amazon coming to the community, the price of the sale to the multi-trillion-dollar company, and the potential for a data center being built in the future.
Currently, the nearly 60 acres are being offered up for just over $2 million or $35,000 per acre to Amazon, a drop in the bucket to the company currently valued at approximately $2.6 trillion.
After extensive debate regarding entering into the Purchase and Sale Contract, Alder Grazia Perrella made a motion to table the discussions until the new Sheboygan Zoning Code has been finalized.
However, Alders John Belanger, Dean Dekker, and Trey Mitchell chose to push through the contract prior to the new Zoning Code taking effect by a 3-2 vote.
The matter will now move in front of the full Common Council, which will ultimately decide if Amazon makes its way to Sheboygan.
