Minneapolis. Congressman Glenn Grothman, who represents Manitowoc County in Washington, described the shooting death of 37-year-old Renee Good as “tragic.”
However, he also stated on the WCUB Breakfast Club that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) should continue its role in addressing the presence of unauthorized immigrants in the U.S.
“There was no question this was a scary situation for ICE,” he stated. “And I think it’s a lesson that you shouldn’t aim your car at law enforcement officers. You’re putting yourself at severe risk there.”
Good was shot by ICE Agent Johnathan Ross after she attempted to drive away while another agent tried to open her vehicle door.
Three shots were fired during the encounter, and Good died at the scene.
Congressman Grothman described the incident as a teachable moment.
“(It’s) a tragedy for sure, but if law enforcement tells you to stop your car, tries to open the door on the car, let him open the door, and stop,” he said. “And the last thing you want to do is try to run your car at a law enforcement officer.”
Grothman also said Good could have been there to disrupt ICE’s operations. However, he’s not sure if that was confirmed.
That statement was made by U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and President Donald Trump, calling Good’s actions “an act of domestic terrorism” and that the ICE agent “fired defensive shots.”
Some Democratic representatives have called the shooting a homicide and continue to say ICE is making American cities less safe.
