Two boys’ hoops rivals meet tonight for first place in the EWC as the Roncalli Jets host the Brillion Lions at the Hangar.
Both teams are undefeated in 5 conference games and sport identical 7-2 overall records and enjoy a two-game cushion over Two Rivers and Kiel.
The Jets snapped a two-game losing streak Tuesday night with a convincing victory at Valders; however, they received news that senior Donovan Cowley’s season and high school basketball career is over.
He suffered a foot injury recently and will be heading for surgery, likely sometime early next week.
Cowley, a four-year starter for the Jets, was averaging 22 points on 51.5% shooting to go along with a team-leading six rebounds and three assists per game.
Others will have to pick up the slack, including junior guard Max Gulseth, who’s averaging nearly 21 points per game, and senior Dominik Frozena, who’s slowly working his way back into the flow after missing time at the beginning of the season.
The Brillion Lions have another very good team led by head coach Chad Shimek.
Junior Colton Larsen is averaging about 20 points per game on 53% shooting, a club-best seven rebounds, and he shoots 75% from the foul line.
Senior Heath Cousin scores about 12 per game while dishing out a team-leading 3.5 assists per game, while senior Connor Holly averages 11 points, 4 rebounds, and a little better than three assists per contest.
Every team statistic is relatively even, with the exception that the Lions defend very well.
They commit 11 fouls per game, while the Jets commit 17 per contest on average.
