Outagamie County may be settling in a federal wrongful death lawsuit.
It all stems from an incident in 2020, when Xee Yang was being assisted by sheriff’s deputies during a mental health crisis.
They were transporting her to the Winnebago Mental Health Institute when Yang was able to open the back door of the van and leapt from the vehicle.
She was left alone in the back of the van, according to reports, and the doors were unlocked. She later died from her injuries.
WBAY reports that the County Finance Committee approved a $400,000 settlement, which would be paid to her spouse, and the erection of a memorial bench in her honor.
The full board must now take up the proposal at its next meeting.
