Leaders in the City of Appleton have recognized the life-saving efforts of an 11-year-old girl.
Late last year, Josie Pethan was homesick from school when her mother experienced a sudden cardiac emergency.
Josie quickly realized something was wrong and called 911.
While on the phone with dispatchers, Josie followed the instructions for CPR and lifesaving efforts for her mother.
In their recognition, the Appleton Police Department stated, “She did not hesitate. She did not panic. She continued CPR until responders arrived and took over care.”
Thanks to the 11-year-old’s courage, composure, and quick thinking, her mother’s pulse was restored.
She would then be transported to a local hospital for further care and ultimately survive the medical emergency.
To recognize Josie’s heroic efforts on Monday (January 5th), she was presented with certificates and challenge coins from the Appleton Police and Fire Departments and the Appleton Mayor’s Office.
During her recognition ceremony, Josie and her family were able to reunite with the first responders and dispatchers who also played a pivotal role in saving her mother’s life.
In closing, Appleton Police said, “Josie reminds us that heroes don’t always wear uniforms. Sometimes, they’re eleven years old and answer the call when it matters most. We are incredibly proud of Josie and honored to recognize a young lifesaver whose courage made all the difference.”
