Wisconsin Public Service and We Energies are celebrating a “remarkable” year for their peregrine falcon program.
Since 1992, the two energy providers have welcomed 465 falcon chicks at their power plants, helping the endangered bird escape possible extinction.
That means 20% of all peregrine falcons born in the wild in Wisconsin over the past 33 years hatched at WPS or We Energies facilities.
Those statistics were just a small part of the recently released Peregrine Falcon Nesting Season Report, which also noted that 12 new baby chicks were born in Wisconsin last year, and 22 peregrines hatched at the We Energies Presque Isle Power Plant in Michigan.
Falcon Expert Greg Septon said in the report, “I’d like to again thank everyone at We Energies and WPS for their continuing support and interest in the falcons. From ensuring the online nest box webcams stay up and running, especially during the critical nesting season, to on-site, hands-on help with management and public relations efforts, everyone plays an integral role in making this program a success.”
