Some Sheboyganites will be getting a freezing start to 2026.
The beloved Polar Bear Plunge will once again be held tomorrow afternoon (January 1st), bringing hundreds to the lakeshore to ring in the new year in the chilly waters of Lake Michigan.
The plunge itself will take place at 1:00 p.m. at Deland Park on Broughton Drive, with temperatures currently forecast to be in the low teens.
The event organizer, Justin Bohn, asks those participating in the plunge to sign in at Dave’s Who’s Inn beforehand or after the event in order to keep accurate statistics.
Bohn also reminds plungers to bring along a change of clothes, as well as towels and blankets to stay warm after jumping in the water, which has been hovering around 39 degrees over the past few days.
The 2026 Polar Bear Plunge marks the event’s 33rd rendition, having been a staple in Sheboygan for those brave enough since 1973.
Updates on the event and a head count after the plunge can be found online by visiting the Sheboygan Polar Bear Club Facebook page.
